Airline chief hits out at 'whispering campaign'

THE head of Flyglobespan has called for an end to the "whispering campaign of negativity" against the airline following reports questioning its future.
Tom Dalrymple, the chairman of the Scottish carrier, said it was debt-free and "extremely well-positioned to see through the well-documented problems facing the industry".

In a letter to the media yesterday, Dalrymple said: "I don't know who is
trying to destabilise us by putting out these rumours – but they are wasting their time. Our customers, thankfully, are ignoring them as our planes are full and our advance bookings are very healthy."

The letter came a day after Dalrymple hit back in The Scotsman over a report that a bookmaker had offered 6-4 odds on the airline being the next to go under.

In his letter, Dalrymple said debt had been the common denominator among recent airline casualties, such as XL, which he said had had a huge management buy-out loan to service. However, the Flyglobespan chairman said his airline had "no such problems".

He added: "We have no debt, and, in addition, have substantial cash assets, built up over 30 years of successful trading as the Globespan Group. We have significant property assets in the UK, France and Spain – and, most importantly, have a strong and powerful business model."

Flyglobespan operates to 23 destinations and employs some 1,300 staff. It reported losses of £13 million last year following problems with unreliable aircraft on transatlantic routes.

Dalrymple continued: "The soaring price of airline fuel has led to some rapid re-evaluation of business plans but, despite these difficulties and a general economic slowdown, we have performed well and put last year's problems firmly behind us."

The trouble with this airline is that you cannot be sure they are going to operate a service they have advertised.

They announce routes with the usual fanfare and quietly withdraw them without having operated a single flight. Aberdeen-Geneva is a case in point. Aberdeen-Lanzarote is another. Customers are then subject to considerable inconvenience and cost to find alternative flights.

After recently being fined £5000 for operating an aircraft across the Atlantic which did not meet the Minimum Equipment List regulations and with well founded concerns about the airline industry's economic prospects in general, it's little wonder that at least one bookmaker has Fly Globespan as top of the pops to be the next casualty.

I agree with Ubi. They have a habit of changing flights at the last minute. Not minor changes Either, I recently had a lang term booked flight direct from Glasgow to Orlando changed twice. First to move the date of travel from a Saturday to a preceeding Wednesday (had to reorganise car-hire and holiday arrangements), then the flight-times, which switched from mid-afternoon to night-time flights, arriving when the car-hire place was scheduled to be closed, and routed via Belfast adding an hour to the flight-time. This with a child passenger, and only uncovered as I checked flights on the internet - not from Flyglobespan themselves. Oh, and I had to fork out additional surcharges prior to receiving the tickets.
I don't know how they win awards. I certainly won't be flying with them again.

A few years back, myself and my wife booked a short break to Prague and decided to fly with Globespan because the day and times suited. A week before we were due to fly, the emailed to say that our flight from Edinburgh was cancelled, but they had booked us onto the Glasgow flight. I called to find out why and wa given a part refund to cover hotel costs for the night. We did fly with them and thought that the staff and fligth in general was great. Due to that we booked them for a flight to Nice this year as they went direct. We were due to fly on the Saturday, but got emailed to say that the Saturday flight was cancelled and they were flying us out on the Friday. When I called this time, they were much less helpful. They said that we only got money back the first time as they changed the airport, though because we would still be going from Edinburgh we were intitled to nothing. I told this that I thought this wasn't very customer friendly as we had booked accommodation and car hire. To say that they didn't give a t@ss is an understatment. The girl on the other end of the phone said that if I didn't take the Friday, all they would do was to give me my money back. We were unable to find any other airline to fly direct from Edinburgh or Glasgow on our required day and in the end had to cancel the holiday. Due to that, I think it will be highly unlikely we will ever go (or try to go) with Globespan again.
