Aer Lingus starts talks on cost cuts

AER Lingus, Ireland's former state airline, yesterday said it will proceed with a cost-reduction programme to deliver the "substantial savings" it says are necessary to ensure its viability as an independent company.
The airline said that it was committed to delivering these cost savings "as a matter of urgency" and that management will meet staff and trade union representatives next week to discuss how the savings will be achieved. In August, the airline announced a first-half operating loss of 22.3 million (£17.4m).
