Strange case of Salmond, the lobbyist and the press release

Published Date: 13 April 2008
ALEX Salmond allowed a ScottishPower lobbyist with close links to the SNP to agree the timing of a statement in which the First Minister opposed takeover plans for the firm.
Private e-mails obtained by Scotland on Sunday show Phil Henderson, head of public affairs for ScottishPower, had extensive access to Salmond ahead of the statement and even agreed a delay with his officials.

In February, Salmond went public to back Spanish energy company Iberdrola – the owner of ScottishPower – amid rumours it was about to be taken over by French firm EDF.

Salmond's political opponents last night described the access and apparent influence enjoyed by Henderson – a former SNP official – as "extraordinary". One Labour MP said she would refer the matter to financial watchdogs to check whether any rules had been broken.

But the SNP described the complaints as "contrived guff", and insisted the First Minister was merely protecting Scottish interests by speaking up against a rival bid that could have cost the country jobs and investment.

The controversy began in February, when rumours first surfaced that Iberdrola was about to be taken over by state-owned EDF. On February 6, Henderson e-mailed the First Minister's senior advisers, updating them on the discussions.

E-mails obtained under Freedom of Information legislation show that Henderson wrote: "Further to our conversation on Friday, you'll know FM (First Minister] has agreed to issue a statement in support of Iberdrola. I spoke to Alex on Friday and he agreed it was sensible to postpone any statement until later this week."

ScottishPower then asked Salmond's aides to update it on their plans so they could inform Iberdrola in Madrid.

Two weeks later, on February 24, the statement was issued. Prior to its release, one of Salmond's senior special advisers, Will McLeish, e-mailed press officers at the Scottish Government, saying: "I have been coordinating with ScottishPower's Phil Henderson … I will speak to Phil on Sunday morning ... and then call to ask for it to be released."

After the release, in a further e-mail to McLeish, Henderson writes: "Thanks again for all your assistance in pulling together the statement."

The revelations come after Salmond has been criticised over the access he has given to other powerful players, such as Donald Trump and hotel owner Donald MacDonald.

Industry insiders stressed last night that Henderson, a well-respected public affairs expert, was simply doing what any other person in his position would do and that there was no question of any wrongdoing on Henderson's, or ScottishPower's, part.

But Labour MPs last night claimed Salmond's actions could be open to accusations he breached rules on fair market trading.

Labour's Rosemary McKenna said: "These are utterly extraordinary e-mails. It is unprecedented for the First Minister to agree the timing of their releases with a company in a takeover bid.

"This is a serious matter and I am considering referring his actions to the relevant regulatory authorities for action."

The move comes just two years after the SNP mounted a vigorous campaign to prevent Iberdrola buying ScottishPower, when it claimed that the takeover of such a "strategically important company" was against Scotland's interests.

Former UK energy minister Brian Wilson added: "I am surprised by the degree of collusion between a political interest and a commercial one, particularly since the First Minister was just as hostile to Iberdrola at the time they were buying ScottishPower as he now is to EDF."

He added: "The problem with this kind of intervention is that it can rapidly become counter-productive. If EDF succeed in buying Iberdrola, of which ScottishPower is a relatively small part, they will be under absolutely no obligation to the Scottish Government."

But a spokesman for the First Minister said: "On a daily basis, hundreds of organisations are in touch with ministers and officials on a range of issues. The fact that a ScottishPower official was once employed by the SNP is irrelevant, as is the previous employment history of the many hundreds of people in contact with government."

He added: "When the First Minister decides to make a public statement on an issue of substantial Scottish interest, as on this occasion, it would be absurd for officials not to liaise with the relevant organisation.

"In the context of rising domestic fuel prices, there is already concern about lack of competition in the industry given the relatively small number of energy suppliers, and the prospect of that number declining further through takeover."

But claims the merger would reduce competitiveness were disputed last night by Energywatch Scotland, the consumer watchdog. Spokesman Graham Kerr said: "The company's costs would be lower if there was a buyout and so there would be both a dividend for shareholders and for consumers."

A spokesman for ScottishPower said the statement on the takeover had been Salmond's decision. "Phil Henderson has good relationships with … all levels of government from all parties," he said.

But the SNP is also facing questions about why it has not intervened with other firms, such as the Scottish-based British Energy, which is also facing a potential takeover by EDF.

If these very same actions had been used by a Labour government especially if it had two years previously condemned the very company which it was now aiding and a former Labour official was now the head of public affairs for that company the indignation of those that have posted and those that will post in the defence of the SNP would have been overwhelming.

If you know Eddie to be a Unionist, why even bother, read the nationalist press and drink more IRN BRU, that will help. Did you read the latest from Westminster about Brown announcing a reduction of the tax rate from 22% to 20% last year, but deliberately failing to inform Westminster and the People of this group of countries that he intended to scrap the 10% rate for those on menial incomes.

Now that is a crime that demands punishment from the people. 650,000 people will be paying higher tax out of the pittance they get from employers who would pay the minimum wages. You know the ones who support immigration and the New Numpties, who betrayed the people they used to help before they all become yuppies.

41% support the Scottish Government led by Prime Minister Salmond negotiating an agreement for the Independance of Scotland. 40% wish to stay in the UK and 19% were undesided.

Under the referendum rules laid down by Westminster before, shouldnt 40% be enough for Independance to go full steam ahead.

'The Scotsman' was the first 'quality' newspaper Iever read. I used to but it religiously from the 70s to the early 90s and enjoyed it's sense of 'Scottishness.'

Today, I must say goodbye to an institution. All attempts at even handedness has gone out the window and now the editorial stance seems to be designed to appeal to would be Londoners and loyalists, together with those whose first allegiance is to the London Labour party.

I fear for 'The Scotsman.' It's heading down the road of being a footnote in history. In the not too distant future, people will say, 'I remember 'The Scotsman.' It use to be a good paper at one time.'

One reason why this (former) newspaper and its sister publication, the Hootsmon, attracts so much attention from those who reject the cringing editorial policy adopted by the owners, is that, through these threads, we now have the opportunity to expose and counter the lies, contrived guff, hypocrisy, and dearth of intellectual rigour under pinning the unionist stance.

For far too long we have been content merely to accept the crumbs from Westminster’s table, and accepting without question that this is our rightful place in life.

Whereas pronouncements from the likes of Rosemary McKenna or George Foulkes were previously treated as gospel, nowadays, they are only accorded the respect to which they are entitled.

It is through forums such as this that the general public can find themselves better informed than they otherwise would have been, if they relied solely upon the somewhat embittered and contrived attitude displayed in the pages of this publication.

Morning Spooky, it's gobsmackingly hypocritical that a 'National' newspaper would inform people it plans a hugely important poll to be published on a certain day and doesn't go through with it.

One can only surmise that they do not like the result. It smacks of a Mugabe style approach to the truth.

Not what we expect from an English owned newspaper, with an English editor, staffed by English journalists with a profoundly anti-Scottish bias, called The Scotsman.

ALEX SALMOND ATE MY HAMSTER!
============================

In an astonishing story uncovered under the FOI Act by an anonymous journalist at this paper, it can be revealed that Alex Salmond ate a 5 year old's hamster, which was presented to him as he did a 'walkabout' tour of Stirling.

The same journalist can also reveal that Salmond drinks the blood of babies and worships naked at the feet of a carved effigy of Satan (a model apparently that has the cloven feet and legs of a goat, the chest of a horse, the head of tony blair and the teeth of his wife Cherie).

Lord Foulkes has commented that 'it was only a matter of time before Salmond's personal life caught up with him', as he headed for the bar.

Professor Arthur Midwinter said that Salmond's hamster eating escapades had cost the economy 14 bazillion pounds in a formula he himself has made up and confirmed as accurate. This is the equivalent of £38,000,000 for every taxpayer in Scotland.

In a related articlce in our sister paper - The Sunday Sport - it can be revealed that Salmond has hidden from the Scottish Nation our store of chemical and nuclear weapons on the moon. 2 Green MSP's were shocked and disgusted by this revelation and immediately called for the return of the tolls on the forth road bridge.

Wendy Alexander, the scottish labour leader, said in an official statement to the scottish parliament - "There once was a hungry, hungry caterpillar that didn't eat hamsters. Please vote for us - PLEASE! The SNP are terrible, we are great and we don't like this opposition malarky. It's no FAIR!"

The bill for last year's Scottish elections is more than double the previous one, with the cost reaching almost £40m

Nice coup de gras there for the old labour regime -

Introduce a systme that ensures its very difficult for one party to hold a majority,
Introduce a complex counting system,
Introduce having 2 elections on the same day,
Take voters 'an afteerthought,
And cost the taxpayer twice what it used to to run the election...

nice work.

Originally, he posted a comment at number 555 telling everyone he only ever posted as Highland Mighty, but had forgotten to change his login or use his other browser and it was posted as 'British Pride'

This post of his (referred to by me and others at or about 555 has actually gone completely...

Not modded, not just the text removed, but the whole original post at 555 he made has been fully removed???

Now, someone help me out here - Have I overlooked something or has a staff member at The Scotsman been caught out and tried to cover their tracks?

Perhaps Highland Mighty was reported for using multiple logins and had *all* his comments pulled???

SNP goons on this forum might prefer to hear and see no evil, but it's just another nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned. Salmond's as dodgy as the worst of them, and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could comfortably spit him to represent the true interests of the Scottish people. Bought and sold for corporate gold?

"2nd Nikostratos, Bit immature but slight intelligence"

Spooky I resent that slur my immaturity levels are very high having been working on them very hard you know.

And as for Intelligence 'unionists' don't need that at all in fact can be a hindrance......Self doubt disbelief in the cause and all that sort of thing.

Union is best not sure about him strange sort of 'cove' but seeing as he has got union in his moniker must be alright....

either The Scotsman pulled a whole section of posts completely by the user (do they do this if they break the rules) or,

someone at The Scotsman is at it.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. YOUR COMMENTS ARE VALUABLE TO US.

so said the scotsman in their survey.

LIARS they werent that valuable if you cannay be bothered publishing them because they dont agree with the editorial stance.

this should be an example to all journalism students of how to really really pee of the readers.

Sad, sad news for me that Highland beat me on our highly effective unionist list. I suspect Jackie will be falling on me from a great height!

What is the big issue in this story! Should the headline not read something like "First Minister defends Scottish Jobs".

I'd be more upset if we had a First Minister who did not defend Scottish Interests because of bureacracy.

HEADLINE NEWS...........................

Today the scotland on sunday defended its decision not to publish the results on a survey it conducted on scottish independence. A spokesperson said "well you know te boss said we couldnae cos we have to support labour or we are pure getting the sack and we didnae like the results cos everyone wanted independence. naebody said anything the last time we did something like this when we were supposed to have a question and answer session with wendy alexander and the whole illegal donations thing meant she didnae turn up"

numerous readers complained that they had been misled as the papers said that the results would be published on april the 13th.

The editor commented "ah but we didnae say which april the 13th we meant april the 13th two thousand and never unless the result went the way we wanted"

#90 Applauds Nikos, absolutely old bean. The number one Unionist is 'The Scotsman'.

From t'internet aka Wiki.

"The Scotsman was launched in 1817 as a liberal weekly newspaper by lawyer William Ritchie and customs official Charles MacLaren in response to the "unblushing subservience" of competing newspapers to the Edinburgh establishment. The paper was pledged to "impartiality, firmness and independence".

Ha ha ha ha changed days.

I feel like buying the scotsman to have a ceremonial burning however even that would be a waste of cash when i could spend it on a quality newspaper like the sunday herald which does publish survey...........

does anyone think we could take them to trading standards? False advertising?

Haha Kippered you Nats again! WIth this marevellous little story (can you spot any actual point of wrong-doing purported above?), we have diverted attention from the UK courts' ruling that the Westminster government ordered a stop to criminal investigation of bribery in arms deals illegally, and that the request from the Saudis would have given rise to obstruction of justice charges if it had been made here!

Thank you for joining the Cybernats. Your commitment to a brave new Scotia free of alien influences is appreciated by Alex, and indeed by Sir Sean and Mister Souter.

Now this is how it works.

Your task is to scour the websites of those Scottish newspapers that permit comments, and fill them up with - well, whatever you like, really.

You will probably get an email from us suggesting the line to take, but it is really important for everyone not to take the same line. Nonetheless there will generally be one story that we all hack into. Usuallly one that expresses any criticism of Alex or even more, Mister Souter.

"Another non story ..." First of all, we need to undermine the reporting. So attack the reporter. Suggest that he or she is unprincipled, incompetent, drunk, corrupt, and in the pay of some English conspiracy. Feel free to make reference to MI5, the CIA and Mossad. You can extend that to the owners if you like.

"Do people still buy this rag?" Suggest that the newspaper is rapidly runnng out of customers because of its wicked and perverse editorial policy, probably dictated in London. Declare that you grew up as a child reading the paper, but it has gone downhill so fast that you will never buy it again and even your dear auld rheumy-eyed faither has stopped buying it You do not need to say that you have never bought a single copy since the internet made that un-necessary.

Attack the personalities of the oppposition. Remember, personal attacks are entirely acceptable and indeed desirable. The leader of the opposition is always to be referred to as "Bendy Wendy". A full lexicon of abusive terms will be circulated shortly.

But if anyone else uses the expression "Fish-heid McMoonface" to describe Alex, we must complain bitterly. And it goes without saying that any even mildly critical reference to Mister Souter must be attacked without quarter.

The SNP is a modern political party with modern attitudes but please don't let that interfe

...interfere with what you are doing. Feel free to make comments on the family life, bodyshape, appearance, perceived sexual attractiveness and gender role of anyone not in the SNP. Obviously challenge such comments where they relate to our side. But "keep it clean" - remember that Mister Souter will be reading.

And whatever you do, don't let anyone know that you are a Cyber-nat.

69. Yes, that was a bit of a black eye for Highland! He is affronted and has been too embarrassed to post since. That damned System 3 poll in today's Herald showing support for independence at 41%, same as the Daily Mail poll last week, is also rankling with us a bit, after our concerted "one-off, meaningless, opt-in" rubbishing of the 41% figure last week. HM and AM2 will be on shortly when they have consulted Jackie re. the validity of this poll in the context of longer term trends that you Nats cannot perceive.

Union is Best,

102. Highland/AM2. Welcome back, and nice new moniker! Now, don't make another pigs-ear of it by posting with a different moniker in answer to a question posed to that one!

Like the new tack - I saw that was highlighted on Jackie's crib sheet this morning! No news on how to rebut that System 3 poll, but expect the statistics chappies will come up with something shortly!

I suppose seeing 2 polls in one day that hasn't gone your way has ruined your Sunday. Never mind, I am sure you can join Michelle Mone and leave Scotland when Independence comes in a couple of years. Tara love, it was fun while it lasted.
