FIRST Minister Alex Salmond is to meet with the proposed new owners of brewery giant Scottish and Newcastle to seek assurances over jobs in the Capital.
He admitted a "question mark" hangs over the future of the Edinburgh HQ after a £7.8 billion bid by European brewing giants Carlsberg and Heineken was accepted last week.

Mr Salmond said during First Minister's Questions yesterday that a meeting had been agreed with the potential new owners.

He told Labour's Edinburgh Central MSP Sarah Boyack: "Our initial analysis, which is supported by industry commentators, suggests that the substantial majority of jobs in Scotland look secure under the new circumstances.

"However, there would have to be a serious question mark in terms of the continuing functions of the group headquarters in Edinburgh, which in terms of employment number around 100. These are highly skilled jobs, and very important, not just to Edinburgh but to Scotland as a whole.

No job is safe these days, but at least Alex Salmond is more than capable of holding his own against the people of Heineken

Sad story but has been in the pipeline for years. S & N were just waiting for the right offer.

Why does every headline about the first minister being couched in the negative?

Why does the word admits appear. Could the headline not read First Minister acts to talk to new S&N owners"

Easy answer really!

Reality check!

The Scottish Government has a 71% approval rating despite the hostility of the majority of the Scottish media!

Answers on a postcard what do the posters think the approval ratings of the political commentators on the Scotsman would achieve?

Admits is a nice word to suggest culpability.

Just shows how trashy this virtual (and I assume real) rag is.

(Must read the stuff I write before hitting POST)

I mean and I assume it is trashy in real life too... since I do not have the ability to have it at hand.

(Phew)

I wonder when this will actually be done and wonder what the odds are on a "tsk tsk dinnae dee it again" being the sole punishment.
