A YEAR-LONG celebration of Scotland's culture and heritage has been given a £5 million funding boost.
Jim Mather, the tourism minister, announced the Scottish Government cash support as he urged everyone north of the Border to play their part in making Homecoming Scotland a success in 2009.

Marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Bur
ns, the initiative aims to persuade Scots and people of Scottish descent to come to visit the country during the year.

A string of flagship events are envisaged across the country and funding will be made available to local authorities and event organisers.

EventScotland and VisitScotland jointly have the task of co-ordinating the initiative, which will include a series of specially-commissioned events across the country.

A £1 million fund, offering grants of between £5,000 and £50,000, is already open for applications from groups and organisations.

And plans have been unveiled for a massive clan gathering - featuring the world's biggest Highland Games - in Edinburgh's Holyrood Park.

Mr Mather said: "The general idea is to invite people home, whether they are in London or the other side of the world.

"Nothing like this has ever really been done before, but it really does have huge potential for our tourism industry and there's no limit on the kind of benefit it could bring."

Excellent news, this coupled with the re-introduction of proper Scottish history in our schools, will help to
grow the strong feeling of national identity that is returning to the average Scot. One of the most recognised cultures in the world should be celebrated.

Whaur's mah kilt an' mah ancestral claymore! If'n theys're comin' hame ... ah'm up fur the furst fecht!!!

One of the reasons the Scottish Diaspora was a good idea was because if you put two Scots in an empty room, somebody would start a fight! And in Glescae ... only one person had to be in that room to start the fight!!!

It's a great idea if there were only the transport infrastructure to support it.

In a previous article in today's paper we read that it is cheaper to get to the Caribbean than between Aberdeen and London.

If you come to Scotland from anywhere by aeroplane, you invariably have to fly via London, which has to be the worst first impression any foreigner can get (I'm talking about the disgraces that are Heathrow and Gatwick)...

#10 Jacqueline, unfortunately you are only right where tourist destinations are concerned. I can only fly with BMI from Zurich to Edinburgh and last time they changed the flight times without telling me, then lost my luggage. Otherwise, I have to fly via another airport every time, which is time consuming and for London, very nasty! And I've compared prices and BA is almost always the best value. KLM and Air France are always around 50-60% more!

A year long celebration of all things Scottish is only for tourism, the people who do not choose to live in Scotland who were born here, in my experience would never come back. Put the money to Nicola and Alexs' education fund.

What is meant by a year long celebration of Scotland's culture.
It will probably turn out to be Elton John as was so-called Highland Culture and Billy Connolly for the rest.

This can only be a good thing for Scotland. Money well spent compared to the Scottish money squandered celebrating royal family events in London, Engerland, or building the chunnel, or Wemberley.

Has that crook Wendy not resigned yet??

Are you starting to get the picture of a cultural renaisance that has nothing to do with Brigadoon or cringing unionism?
