GORDON Brown was ridiculed yesterday after accidentally saying public spending under Labour would include a "zero per cent" rise.
The Commons burst into laughter when Mr Brown, questioned by Tory leader David Cameron at Prime Minister's questions, made the gaffe.

His spokesman was later forced to clarify that Mr Brown had meant to say that current spending would rise by 0.7
per cent on average between 2011-12 and 2013-14.

However, the incident served to highlight an increasingly acrimonious dispute between the leaders on how the country addresses the after-effects of the recession following the general election – with a combination of tax rises and spending cuts expected.

Mr Brown has sought to open clear ground between Labour and the Tories by saying his party would not cut spending – a claim seemingly undermined by his gaffe.

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, said both his rivals were indulging in a "bogus debate" by using misleading figures designed to deflect attention from their true plans.

In his budget in April, Chancellor Alistair Darling published precise spending figures that show capital spending – the money used for infrastructure projects – falling from next April, a fact Mr Brown finally admitted last week.

Yesterday Mr Cameron attempted to force the Prime Minister to admit that total spending – which includes cash spent on day-to-day items such as wages – would also fall under Labour.

The row was sparked last month when Andrew Lansley, the Tory shadow health secretary, said most Whitehall departments faced a 10 per cent cut on the basis of official figures – which Labour described as "Tory cuts".

Mr Cameron yesterday accused the Mr Brown of being in "full retreat" on spending and said he was guilty of "deceit" when he said the Tories were proposing 10 per cent cuts.

The Prime Minister said capital spending would fall after 2011 because cash had been brought forward in an attempt to spend the country out of recession.

"The debate about public spending is about how we return to growth and jobs in the economy," he said. "The reason we have advanced spending to 2009-10 is so that we can spend to get out of recession."

Mr Brown also appeared to rule out holding a comprehensive spending review – a process which sets spending limits for a three-year period – by saying it would be "wrong" to have one "in the midst of a recession" and it was impossible to predict future unemployment and economic growth.

Last night, Mr Brown denied misleading the country. "I have always told the truth and I've always told people as it is," he told the BBC. He said it was "completely untrue" of shadow chancellor George Osborne to allege the Tories were being barred from obtaining government spending figures to allow them to prepare for government.

For some reason or this is not reported by Scottish media...

LABOUR VOTE AGAINST PARLIAMENT TRANSPARENCY STANDARDS

Labour MPs this yesterday voted down the introduction of Scottish Parliament standards of transparency for the House of Commons. An SNP amendment – supported by all opposition parties – would have made it an offence for an MP to intentionally fail to declare financial interests.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP argued that the Parliamentary Standards Authority Bill must match Scottish Parliament standards of transparency, including the introduction of criminal penalties against MPs who break the rules.

Mr Robertson said:

“Westminster is reeling from the expenses scandal, and it is disappointing to say the least that Labour MPs have voted down the chance to match Scottish Parliament standards of transparency and accountability.

“This Bill is about trying to build trust in the Westminster system, but at the first chance Labour MPs have voted against total transparency on the key issue of financial interests.

“It is essential that we move to a trustworthy system - and the Scottish Parliament sets the benchmark on how that can be done. It is essential that Westminster matches Scottish Parliament standards of transparency, including the introduction of criminal penalties against MPs who break the rules on expenses or fail to properly declare financial interests.

“The Scottish Parliament has shown the way with legal sanctions that can be applied against wayward parliamentarians, and Westminster must introduce the same sanctions against MPs that break the rules

“We now need to get on with the independent audit of the last four years of claims so that MPs’ accounts can be cleared or otherwise, and we get on with the urgent process of restoring public confidence.”

When do they stop becoming slips of the tongue but realisation from the Labourites that he is not fit to govern?

It's becoming a rather sad, shambolic sight, watching Brown slowly dissipate away every time he opens his mouth.

Gordon brown's own party want rid of him, but that says as much about the current state of new labour and the bunch of misfit MP's within as it does about Gordon brown's abilities.

However, although labour are a load of old cobblers, Gordon Brown has been a major contributor to how bad Labour has proven to have been, and when they give us the tories in Westminster, they will be as equally likely to preside over a pile of political pants.

Scotland should vote SNP, the charlatans within westminster led parties need the heave ho.

Gordon's leader in Holyrood, Earl Gray, made another statistical gaffe on the Politics Now programme.

He said at the beginning of Holyrood 10 years ago child poverty was 1 in 5, then we got it down to 1 in 4 and now it's 1 in 3.

In other words, it was 20%, then 25% and now it's 33.5%.

Amazingly nobody picked him up on it. Had I been there I would have been saying that even if it was now only 20% that is nothing to boast about in a country which has had Oil and Gas funds flowing for 35 years.

Particularly as Norway's child poverty is 0%.

Another Brown blunder by the man who has bankrupted Britain.

Speech by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, to Mansion House (20th June 2007 from HM Treasury Web Site)
My Lord Mayor, Mr Governor, my Lords, Aldermen, Mr Recorder, Sheriffs, ladies and gentlemen.
Over the ten years that I have had the privilege of addressing you as Chancellor, I have been able year by year to record how the City of London has risen by your efforts, ingenuity and creativity to become a new world leader.
Now today over 40 per cent of the world's foreign equities are traded here, more than New York:
• over 30 per cent of the world's currencies exchanges take place here, more than New York and Tokyo combined,
• while New York and Tokyo are reliant mainly on their large American and Asian domestic markets, 80 per cent of our business is international, and
• in a study last week of the top 50 financial cities, the City of London came first.
So I congratulate you Lord Mayor and the City of London on these remarkable achievements, an era that history will record as the beginning of a new golden age for the City of London.
And I believe the lesson we learn from the success of the City has ramifications far beyond the City itself - that we are leading because we are first in putting to work exactly that set of qualities that is needed for global success:
• openness to the world and global reach,
• pioneers of free trade and its leading defenders,
• with a deep and abiding belief in open markets,

Everytime he replied he looked away out of the window.

Anyone that knows anything about body language will tell you that is the reaction of a dishonest man giving an explanation he knows to be untrue.

Likewise observe him at PMQs he never looks at David Cameron when replying he looks away from his "accuser" another sure sign of his dishonesty.

He keeps repeating the same mantra and same dishonest answers in the hope if you repeat a lie often enough it will become the truth.
Very Goebbels of the Nazi Party fame.

The Tories have rumbled him , the country has rumbled him , time for his Party to do the honourable thing for both the nation and any credibility they have left.

The PM says: "I have always told the truth"

Yes, Pinocchio, we all believe you.

Maybe he meant a "zero per cent" rise in relation to the negative growth the oddly named 'nation' called UKofGB&NI is experiencing, as the economy collapses ever more month by month.

The umbilical chord between Westminster and Holyrood sucks. Time for the new Scotland to be born. We can always say then that Brown helped the process, in a way, though more by his hatred of the Scottish nation than for any love of it.

The Prime Minister simply doesn't have the confidence or personality to speak effectively in the House of Commons.

At PM's QT he flounders around and always fail
to face the Opposition when making the Government case?

During his time as Chancellor he may have been a highly efficient "Stalinist" bureaucrat but when reading the annual Budget details he sounded like
a telephone recording.

We all remember the former Prime Minister Tony Blair as a class act who held the Commons in the palm of his hand. Gordon Brown is no Tony Blair.

His train interview reminded me of someone on automatic who has pat techniques to peddle his lies and tries to interrupt the interviewer constantly to make it appear as if the lies are completely acceptable. The "what I meant was 0.7%" was just humourless BS.

The biggest untruth of course was "I have always told the truth". Very Orwellian and peddled by someone who is becoming more sinister and deranged with each day.

Not so much a slip of the tongue more a manifestation of utter incompetence. Earlier post suggests his body language emphasises his dishonesty, his shifting of body position when about to deliver another lie, his inability to look the interviewer/Cameron in the face when replying, classic signs.
No matter, the vast majority perhaps with the exception of some in the labour party know the game is up. Soldier on Gordon. You do the case for Independence in Scotland a significant service ensuring that when the next election comes the newly awoken Scots will vote for independence in droves. Good news is by then the SNP will no longer be the only game in town. The Scottish Democratic Alliance is just about to enter scottish politics with fresh new ideas and policies set to re-envigorate the political scene and do away forever with the childish and incompetent politics we witness daily from Westminster.

Aye, Gray could not answer properly when questioned why he is refusing the people of Scotland a referendum on the nation's future. The other unionists are also at it. Even though 98% of the audience stuck their hand up when asked if they wanted a referendum.

Gray and Auntie Annabel also fell down badly on the Trident question. Tavish surprisngly managed to make a good point, as in who are we now aiming our missles at? Pity the Scots LibDems cannae see the benefit yet for them in going for Scottish independence. LidDem only sticking point is to keep the UK club as a federation. Not much difference between that though and Scotland as a member state of the EU, the latter almost a federation but with sovereignty remaining with the people of each state (thankfully).

There is increasing evidence of Brown's declining mental state. He is begining to resemble the pictures they show of a shuffling shambolic Hitler during the last days of the bunker - hunched, nails bitten to the quick, the jaw twitching uncontrollably and the inability to behave naturally when in company. The reported raging temper tantrums are also a worrying sign of someone who is becoming more and more paranoid - there again with the colleagues and comrades constantly plotting he has a lot to be paranoid about. His inability to make a decision without reversing it a couple of days later is also a strong indicator of a mind in turmoil. The pathetic attempts at popularism - the cringeworthy appearances on GMTV for example and his craven cowardice when faced with making a decision render this conman unfit to run a bath let alone a government.

and why did you not quote the UK figure.
I'll tell you why, cause you are talking through a hole in your backside.
The IMF figures state
Rank Country US$
1 Luxembourg 113,044
2 Norway 95,062
3 Qatar 93,204
And we of course are so much wealthier than Norway coming in at number 20 compared to their second place with a GDP over twice the UK level.
Anyone who see's this has to realise that the Union dividend is to see Scotland being brought down by the southern part of the island of Great Britain.
