BALFOUR Beatty, the UK's biggest construction firm, bucked the industry gloom yesterday after telling investors trading would remain "strong" this year.
As of the end of May, the group's confirmed order book stood at £11.8 billion, an increase of £400 million since the end of 2007. The figure excludes orders arising from acquisitions Balfour has made this year.

Among the new deals for the firm, which operates in more than 20 countries, is a $330m (£150m) contract to build a highway in San Antonia, Texas. It has also been selected as part of the consortium to build the £445m M74 extension in Glasgow.

Balfour, which also serves markets including healthcare, education and social housing, said: "We anticipate that order intake and trading performance will remain strong throughout the year."
