Aberdeen fails to lure IKEA

FURNITURE giant IKEA has decided against opening a store in Aberdeen, it emerged yesterday.
The Swedish retailer had agreed to carry out a feasibility study after the council claimed it could flourish by saving residents the need to travel long distances to other Scottish branches.

Does not surprise me, Ikea must have thought it would be to much trouble dealing with the council planning department. And the logistics of keeping the store fully stocked would mean driving in aberdeen, that could take weeks..


Oh weel , it will give more room for s.milne to build more shocking flats.

Where did they get the idea we travel long distances to visit Ikea? I wouldn't travel to the end of the street.

The Ikea store to the south of Edinburgh is the ugliest building in the universe. The archetect must have spent all of 10 minutes designing the exterior. Build a huge tin box, paint it blue, put massive IKEA letters in bright yellow on the front - job done.

The planners who allowed that eyesore on the edge of the pentland hills should be fired.

I suppose IKEA stores can be assembled & disassembled in 10mins.

No loss to Aberdeen, seems to be a few stores coming anyway.

West end of Union Street, which has had a few empty units lately, appear to be filling up.

If we can only get someone into the E&M building...

Some of its actually okay.

I furnished my entire 2nd apartment for 2500 euros and it is comfy and reasonably posh looking, even if I bruised myself silly screwing it altogether.

I may be from the States, but isn't 2,500 euros a LOT to furnish an apartment?
