AID payments to farmers affected by the foot-and-mouth crisis have been held up by Brussels, it was revealed yesterday.
They were expecting £6 per ewe, but a bureaucratic hold-up by the European Commission means the Scottish Government cannot pay out £19 million in state aid until the end of the month, said Richard Lochhead, the rural affairs secretary.
Jim McLaren, the president of the NFU Scotland, said:
"I ask Brussels officials to recognise the disastrous consequences of foot-and-mouth disease and move as quickly as possible."
