RUMOUR OF THE DAY
BIDDING for a 26 per cent stake in EWE, Germany's fifth-largest utility company, is expected to reach a climax tomorrow as the company considers bid from two rivals, sources have claimed.

Gaz de France, the French utility company, and Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg, the German power supplier, are the remaining bidders for the stake, a source last night said.

Another source added: "They are studying the two offers and they will say on Thursday who won it".

Werner Brinker, EWE's chief executive, has been seeking a partner for more than a year after EWE's German municipal owners looked to sell the 26 per cent bought in 2003 from E.ON. The sale would be the largest in the German energy market since E.ON bought gas supplier Ruhrgas in 2003.
