AMEC, the oil services company, has been named in a consortium to manage the clean-up of the Sellafield nuclear power plant.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority awarded the contract, which is worth £1.3 billion a year, to a consortium that also includes French company Areva and Washington International of the US, which led the bid.
The contract will involve decommissioning and waste storage work on Britain's biggest nuclear site. The NDA said it had considered four bids before awarding the contract to Washington.
