Traders hit out at tram firm

FED-up traders on Leith Walk have put up a series of vitriolic signs hitting out at tram firm TIE.
The signs borrow the Edinburgh Trams logo but have the strapline "ripping the heart out of local business".

The first sign was put up by Alan Rudland, vice chairman of the Leith Walk and Constitution Street Traders Association, in his imaging shop.

Traders on the busy street have been hit badly by the ongoing roadworks to build the tram line.

#1 This is simply antagonistic and doesn't help the situation at all. Presumably when the trams start running they will refuse to take business from anyone who arrives on a tram

Quite right, as much as I view the trams as a good thing long term, the lack of respect and ultimately help, shown by the council and the firm, to help traders losing money through no fault of their own is disgusting!

Do you think TIE will try and soothe the feeling of these traders with help and assistance or do you think they will just set the copyright lawyers on them for using the logo

Wake up, there's a recession looming. If a business can't survive a few months of roadworks, then it wasn't strong enough to survive any economic downturn.

You can't blame the trams for a poorly managed business going bust. This isn't an era where every business relies on passing trade. There's this thing called the internet which all you people posting to this story have used, and it'll bring customers from far and wide, if traders bother to use it effectively.

Pathetic short-termism - boycott these doom merchants and fulfill their dire prophecies! Bet they won't be handing back loads of money to the council once they are raking in the loot when the trams are running - bunch of chancers!THE TRAMS ARE COMING - GET OVER IT!

These signs are so helpful and constructive!!! It may raise a small smile from passers by but is this really the mature and productive way of trying to make sure the disruption is minimised? If the traders spent as much time focusing on new tactics to help trade as they did on gimmicks then perhaps things might be a wee bit better!
It's hard to be supportive when they behave like kids!

And once the trams are up, there will be Post Tram Moans (PTM)

no1 just remember there will be less tram stops.....maybe time for Shop keepers to but up properties near the tram stops!

Had to visit Edinburgh today,what a joke,every single street is dug-up,very few signs to warn drivers,why anybody would want to live there never mind visit is totally beyond me,it is a complete dump.

I'm still waiting for the first " The trams ate my hamster" stories. Or reports of Elvis seen driving one on the moon.
I'm sure the trams have palyed a part in escalating the middle east conflict, the price of fish and it's all their fault that Hearts and Hibs have never won the Premier League. I can prove this too. Celtic, Rangers, Dundee Utd and Aberdeen have all won it and none of these places have trams. So if you want to herald the downfall of the Old Firm get a tramway to Weegieland.

#15,16,17 You are all correct. Even in winter, which we have now it gets up to 16 degrees, although we get frosts at night.
They also have a huge paper mill here which used to supply the paper that The Guardian, The Times and I think The Scotsman and EEN are printed on. They may still do this.
There are no trams though, but amazingly there are several boarded up and closed shops so there must be a tramway coming.
#18 we need Glasgow to get trams to scupper the old firm.

#20 depends on who is buying, the local who probably will not be able to afford the tram might need the shops. Are the trams for rich tourists to visit the 'new manhattan' at the waterfront so they dont need to get on the 22 bus and sit next to the local junkies, smelly people, neds, or just plain ordinary people going to town?

Very many thanks everyone for your very kind comments! The small independent businesses in Leithwalk try, like everyone else I am sure, to make an honest living. Unfortunately things are tough and the prospect of 3 years of perpetual road works outside does not bear thinking about for either the Shop Keepers nor the residents. Let's wait and see what happends when one of the big companies in Princess Street start complaining when the street infront of them is closed for 6 months. Will everyone be so degrading to them?

Imagine this was YOUR income, how you fed YOUR family. A sickening feeling when you're trying to earn an honest living (which is more than I can say for a lot of Scottish people) and something like this comes along to threaten it.
I say we should try and support them & use local shops when we can. I personally would rather local independants than the big giants. Think about other people for a change
