SEVERAL homes were left without water for almost three days after pressure in the pipes dropped following tram works.
Work to move water mains on Leith Walk left residents in one block unable to wash or make a cup of tea between Wednesday morning and Friday evening.

A lack of pressure was blamed for the problem, with those in ground-floor properties unaffected.

Caroline Brown, 35, said: "The disruption has been bad enough, but my flat had no water for almost three days.

"They were changing over the water mains, but we had no prior warning that this work was going to take place.

"The water was cut off on Wednesday morning and was back on for a couple of hours on Thursday morning with very low pressure. It wasn't even enough to run our central heating.

"I have three children under the age of seven and did no laundry in three days. That might sound trivial, but there is a lot of washing generated by three children.

"They went to school for two days without washing properly."

Mrs Brown said she and her sons, Lochlin, 6, Orrin, 5, and Noah, 2, were brought drinking water, but with no family nearby to rely on, she felt helpless.

She added: "There seems to have been a complete breakdown in communication, as Scottish Water and TIE said they just found out about the problem on Friday, but it had been reported several times."

She said residents have also been assured an investigation was under way as to why they were not informed of the work before it was carried out.

Neighbour John Gibson said he spent hours trying to contact tram works contractors to get some help, but had to get environmental health officers involved to get anyone in to fix the problem.

He said: "Myself and a couple of my neighbours got as many water containers as we could find and filled them from a local shop for the families in my block with children and the elderly.

"During this whole situation, nobody within the block had been informed that work would be taking place in connection with our water supply."

The supply was reinstated by 4.30pm on Friday, after being transferred back to the existing main.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Our engineers, working with the Edinburgh Trams Project, are attending to low-pressure problems in Leith Walk.

"The issue, which has affected only a small number of properties, followed mains diversion work on behalf of the trams project.

"The network has since been redistributed and affected customers returned to full supply. It will be necessary to investigate this matter further."

At least the water was reinstated within 3 days, unfortunately these kids have to stick with their names for life.

No-one in Leith washes anyway, so what's the story?

5

Hmm?,

Not having a water supply to your home for three days when you've got three small children can't be much fun.

However, let's put it into perspective. It was for three days. It's not the end of the world is it and hardly newsworthy. Oh wait, I forgot, TIE were involved somewhere!
6

Hmm?,

13/10/2008 13:30:54
Oops, forgot to suggest she should deduct 3/365ths from her water rates...

So it wasn't TIES fault !

I hope that the idiots scoffing lose their water for 3 days too. Why do they make personal remarks about the children totally uncalled for.

Yet more evidence of the totally shambolic and incompetent handling of this disgraceful tram project.

Those responsible for this mess should be held fully accountable of the misery they are inflicting upon the citizens of Edinburgh.

The whole thing should be scrapped NOW with remaining funds used to compensate IN FULL all those people and businesses affected by this unnecessary project.

So what is the real problem here? I have had to be without water before. Went to market and bought gallon jugs of water(on sale at market) to tide us over. I raised 4 children and my children never ever went to school without a proper washing! Plus I did my laundry at a laundramat to give them clean clothing. Not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination! Just think, then act. Duh. Three days is nothing!

When I were a lad, all we had to drink were gravel and wasps and only had dead leaves and maggots for tea.

5# Are you for real???? A guy on my site been affected the last two weeks and got a newborn. Off again on Sunday. Water pressure too low most of the day. Must be really nice going home every night not knowing if you are going to have a water supply in the MIDDLE of the capital city.

That's about all the notice you do get from Scottish Water. When they are about to replace a water main, the first warning you get is when a van drives by with a loudspeaker, giving you a 30 minute warning that the water is about to be cut off...

Lets not forget that who is responsible for this mess - the SNP. Remember- it was Salmond who stated in his election manifesto that the Edinburgh tram project would not go ahead. Remember, he buckled to the opposition and allowed it to go ahead at the first hurdle. He didn't even try to fight off the challenges. Remember - you voted for the SNP - so you made your bed - now lie in it!!

Would a Transport Edinburgh branded napkin win your support for trams?
No, they’ll need to bribe me with something better than that
Yes, it’s a legitimate way to promote the project
I’m already in favour of the trams
