MOVES to cut down on the traffic outside Edinburgh Castle have been given the go-ahead by council chiefs.
The plans will see tour buses banned from the Esplanade and nearby Johnston Terrace used as a drop-off point for tour parties, with courtesy buses laid on for those unable to manage the short walk to the Castle.

The Castle's growing visitor numbers are said to have left pedestrians and traffic "battling" for space on Castlehill.

Narrow pavements have been blamed for visitors routinely stepping into the road, increasing the number of accidents and making it harder for larger vehicles to pass.

Castlehill also sees a high number of vehicles making deliveries, as well as cars and taxis dropping off passengers.

Other traffic management measures proposed by the council include limiting deliveries to businesses within Castlehill to before 10.30am and after 4.30pm.

Surely it is about time to reprise the funicalar railway / tram link from Princes Street Gardens to the Castle Esplanade?

For that matter could award winning architects not be encouraged to construct a 17 storey luxury hotel at the base of the Castle and allow non-resident punters to use the elevators?

The shuttle buses could then be used to connect Edinburgh Airport with the tramway.

Can I get a consultancy fee for this idea? Brown envelopes are so passé

#3 - I think they should have a cable car from the top of the Haymarket Towers Hotel to the castle ramparts.

We must keep the esplanade entirely clear so that staff can park their cars there all day.

And so another street is closed and meddled with -- The council deliberately creating bottleneck after bottleneck to create the congestion 'problem' ....

It would be nice to return to a time where the government didn't feel it necessary mislead, misinform and backstab it's own people ....
