CITY leaders today said they have received a "very positive" response to plans for a new £750,000 skatepark.
The proposals for Saughton Park would end years of wrangling over the location of Edinburgh's main skatepark, after the council was forced to abandon plans for Inverleith Park.

The latest scheme, which went out for consultation with skaters and residents earlier this year, was drawn up after the Meadows was also ruled out.

The council has also proposed a viewing area for the 70 by 30m park, artificial lighting, CCTV cameras, and special "anti-skate" surfaces on surrounding paths.

The park would be developed in tandem with other new sports facilities in Saughton, as well as the refurbishment of a play park recently damaged by vandals.

City sports leader Deidre Brock said today that feedback had been positive. "We will continue to consult locally on issues such as skatepark design, play facilities and on any concerns raised over the past few months with a view to submitting proposals to planning in the near future."

its about bloody time a park was opened in edinburgh, its been a 20yr wait thanks to stuffy labour councillors sticking their nose up at any such facilies for kids, yet they wonder why kids turn to fighting in the streets, vandalism etc when nothing is provided. I think its shameful its taken this long and a couple of generations have only had bristo square as a 'facility'.

I think the fact this is now going to be sited in saughton is also a poor reflection on the councils 'out of site , out of mind' attitude, lets face it saughton isint exactly central, the meadows would have been a far better location and safer (note CCTV being proposed) AND whats with the special "anti-skate" surfaces on surrounding paths ???!?? small minded thinking by the council once again - 'you will not have any fun until you actualy reached the park' !

livingston had it sorted 20yrs and will still be the best

There should be at least TWO skate parks. One at Sighthill and the other beside the Jack Kane Centre.

Is a Government watchdog right to criticise the planned new hotel on Princes Street?
Yes, it’s totally out of keeping with the setting
No, we need some fresh ideas in the city centre
It’s no worse than a lot of the buildings there already
