HERITAGE watchdogs have come out against plans for a new hotel in Princes Street.
The proposed £40 million scheme would involved the demolition of two listed buildings to make way for a glass-fronted 100-bedroom hotel and major new department store.

But Edinburgh World Heritage and the Cockburn Association say the scheme for 121-123 Princes Street was "wholly inappropriate".

They also criticise the plan to retain only the facade of a Georgian building and "imprison it behind a huge expanse of glass".

The developers behind the proposals, Belfast-based Deramore, lodged a planning application in September after months of talks with planning officials.

No, we need some fresh ideas in the city centre
It’s no worse than a lot of the buildings there already
