Old Town groups get together to document best-known buildings

A PROJECT has got under way to document the history of some of the Old Town's best known buildings.
Community groups are running the six-week long Canongate Project in conjunction with the Save Our Old Town Campaign, which is opposing the controversial Caltongate scheme.

Earlier this month, Scottish ministers secured more time to reach a decision on the Caltongate scheme.

Councillors have already backed the Old Town plans, but because the council has a financial interest – it owns the archways in Market Street – approval rests with ministers. Holyrood will decide whether to give the go-ahead or order a public inquiry.

Ministers have already extended the 28-day period for a response on one occasion.

At last - a small amount of publicity for this, and not before time. The project has been running, with events, talks, workshops, walks etc taking place for several weeks - not just documenting the history of the Old Town's buildings.

Monday 26th May

6pm -7.30pm Talk with Elizabeth Graham of the Cockburn Association on the heritage organisation’s work.


Tuesday 27th May

3-4pm. Reminiscence Group
The memories and experiences of people testify to the special significance of the Canongate. If you have spent time in the Canongate at some point in your life drop in and join us for a chat and a cup of tea.
Then every Tuesday until the 10th June 3-4pm

7pm -9pm Film Screenings 4 "Community Counts"
A collection of contemporary films looking at particular issues raised by communities of place and communities of interest which includes advice about community campaigning and a comic short about community consultation.


Wednesday 28th May

6.30pm - 7.45pm Walking talk on Women of the Old Town with Donald Smith of Scottish Storytelling Centre. Leave from 8 St Marys St.

I add - the council owns more than the arches on Market Street - it also owns the little gem Canongate School, Listed, in good condition, and to be demolished under the ghastly Caltongate scheme, it owns tenements on the Canongate which are being handed over to Mountgrange to make a fakery 'historic' facade for its Sofitel hotel, and it holds common good land which is also set to be handed over to Mountgrange. The cash it will get from this destruction of heritage will be derisory.
