Objectors fail to block new home proposal

A NEW mews property is to be developed in the grounds of a B-listed building, despite concerns from local residents that it will destroy the character of the area.
The site of the development, on land at the rear of Quality Street, sits within the grounds of Dover Cottage, a category B listed building.
Permission has now been granted to erect a two-storey mews-type property with garden ground in the site.
Six local residents had objected to the plans, saying they were not in keeping with the character of the area, or sympathetic to the existing listed buildings, and warning that further development of the site would destroy the character and amenity of the area.
Despite this, officials recommended the plans be approved, and Alan Henderson, the council's head of planning and strategy, said: "Although there is no evidence of mews properties having traditionally occupied the lane, a mews-type property is suited to this location. A larger modern house sits to the south of the site and establishes the principle of development in this area."
Members of the planning committee approved the development on Wednesday.
