THE head of Edinburgh City Council's planning department is set to retire this month.
Alan Henderson was appointed to the post in 1996 and led the planning service through one of the most challenging times for development control in the city's history.

Council leader Jenny Dawe said: "Pressures associated with population and economic growth have required great skill in ensuring essential regeneration and expansion, whilst retaining the unique heritage that defines Edinburgh's character.

"I am sure that members will wish to join me in congratulating Alan on his achievements and wishing him a long and happy retirement."

Mr Henderson has overseen service innovations and improvements that have helped the Capital progress from bottom of the planning league table to one of Scotland's best performing councils.

Edinburgh is a mess. The waterfront at Leith looks like a cheap Spanish seaside resort with only the Scottish government building, plus a few renovated bonds, worthy of such a site.

Are there no developers left to hand over envelopes to smooth out their planning applications?
