Wall building on success of development

THE former head of Edinburgh City Council's development company has been given an award for making an outstanding contribution to Scotland's built environment.

Ian Wall resigned from EDI in March after seven years in the post, amid speculation that he was leaving rather than see through a change of direction councillors had ordered.

He has now received the 2008 Lighthouse Achievement Award from Scotland's national Architecture and Design Centre.

During Mr Wall's time as chief executive of EDI, he oversaw many major projects, including the 15-year redevelopment of Craigmillar and the creation of Edinburgh Park.

He said: "Making good buildings is not difficult if the client has the commitment and determination to do so and has a design team similarly committed. I have had the privilege of working with a great team at EDI."

Chair of the judging panel, Morag Bain, commented: "Ian Wall was an inspired client. Throughout his years with Edinburgh City Council and EDI, he showed a great determination to ensure quality developments and commitment to raising the profile of good architecture."
