EAST Lothian Council has awarded a new contract for a review of public transport.
The review will cover how the council can meet the challenges posed by future population growth and the need for sustainable transport, and will be carried out by engineering and design consultancy, Atkins.

Current travel patterns are dominated by people commuting into Edinburgh and the study will investigate improving links between modes of transport and the development of park-and-ride facilities.

It will help establish how East Lothian tourism can be supported by new public transport links.

Council leader Dave Berry said: "Our vision for East Lothian is to develop the local economy while preserving the environment that makes the area a great place to live and visit.

"This study will point the way forward to a step change in the quality of the area's public transport services."

Set up a contract with lothian buses and get them further into the county instead of the smelly first bus monopoly with rail and bus.

Lothian will have lots of spare buses when the tram replaces the number 22

There are to many buses in the city centre anyway.
They produce quite a significant portion of the congestion and pollution.

How do we improve links with Edinburgh? Why not expand a park & ride facility! Good idea... but while you're at it, could you also mibbe hink aboot reopening our closed railway lines, expanding Waverley Station to contain these, and think seriously about bringing the trams to the south and east of Edinburgh and to Musselburgh.

East Lothian & beyond is ripe for rail expansion (although it's unfortunate that this story appears on a signallers' strike day) with East Linton-Dunbar-
Reston-Berwick and the Haddington branch as obvious
'targets'! What a pity that the old Gullane line is long gone and obliterlated as Aberlady, Gullane, Dirleton and North Berwick could have been linked together as one service!

What about a monorail to compliment the tram system ?

Nothing would surprise me !?

what about horses? as the western banking system has failed! why don't we revert back to the use of horses? must be cheaper than rujnning a car?

Atkins eh....That'll be East Lothian's transportation network f**ked then!

The last time ELC got consultants in to undertake a traffic study, they rearranged Musselburgh High Street to the extent that congestion ids far worse than it ever was before.

Start with rail
1.30 min frequency to North Berwick from Helensburgh once the Bathgate Airdrie line is open
2. Hourly local service to Dunbar linking into InterCity services south.
3. Reopen Haddington with a 30 minute frequency
4. 2 hourly semi fast to Newcastel stopping at Musselburgh, Wallyford, Prestonpans, Longniddry, Dunbar, Reston, Berwick, Alnmouth, morpeth and Cramlington.
5. Get 4 tracks east of Waverley again, even iof it takes a new tunnel. Put the local services over via Newcraighall and the lothian Lines to Musselburgh and take over the current main line from Inveresk. Put the main line onto new high speed tracks which leave the current route at Inveresk and go along the side of the A1 until Oxwellmains. Have links into Dunbar from this route.
Feed buses to the trains from other centres as well as some which carry on through Musselburgh to Edinburgh for intermediate locations.
It would be a good start.

Ian

send a bill to East Lothian Council

Its amazing how Councils pay thousands for Surveys

When a 2 year old (not a comment at you) could easily tell them what is needed.

Instead of spending the money on SURVEYS, the councils should spend it on PUBLIC TRANSPORT improvements

LESS talking and more doing!

Tartangladbach - just for the record, my horse is a lot more expensive to run than a car!!!!!

On a more serious note, a through bus from Whitecraig to Edinburgh would make a helluva difference to some of us.
Whitecraig is like a forgotten village as far as transport links go and compares very unfavourably with Wallyford which is awash with no.44 buses.

Yes but this time the consultant at Atkins is the former head of ELC Transportation section.

Has the review started yet as Lothian have just announced that they are stopping the No 15 service from entering East Lothian. Obviously encouraging tourism by reducing Public Transport availability. Lothian think that they can cram everyone on to the already busy 26 and 44 services.
