PLANNERS in North Berwick have rejected proposals for a new Lidl store following 155 objections from residents.
Residents feared the store, proposed for the out-of-town Tantallon Industrial Estate, would draw trade out of North Berwick's town centre.

Other concerns were the environmental impact, traffic hazards and a range of "bad neighbour" issues.

But supporters stated that Lidl would help to attract additional shoppers to North Berwick, and actually benefit other local shops.

High street shopping will always be viable provided
what is on offer is what the public want. North Berwick
are following Portobello in their efforts to prevent
other choices to shoppers. I hope Lidl can fight this one and get East Lothian into the 21st century. No doubt the objectors shop online and have their groceries delivered unlike the poorer members of society
who have to shop where they can but are being denied the choice by a minority, probably canvassing at the Bridge Club.

No low cost high quality food for the poor in North Berwick - about time the planners got real - oh yes pently of planning approvals for flats, golf course expansions and extensions but cheap food - let them eat Golf Ba's
