A LOTHIANS council has spent almost £100,000 on equalities projects in the last two years, it has emerged.
Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information act show that East Lothian Council has spent slightly more than £91,000 on a variety of projects in the two years up to June 2008.

Among the costs incurred are the hiring of an equality officer in October 2006 which has cost £29,000. A project called Disabled Go Project launched two months ago also cost the local authority around £30,000.

Race equality schemes notched up more than £11,000 of the total costs, but only £120 was spent specifically on gender equality.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: "We are strongly committed to equality and diversity and seek to deliver inclusive services to all members of East Lothian's community. We have a number of equality and diversity initiatives in place."

Right.
Fist things first. Council's price of equality is nearly £90k. EEN journalist is 10% out on their headline. What trust should we have in the remainder of the article?
Additionally, £29,000 on a two year fee for an equality oddicer isn't that outlandish. Also, £11,000 on Race equality schemes over two years isn't that bad either.

I've got to say, this is very poor and inaccurate journalism.

#1 ('Equality Officer'......jeez only in the civil service would that job title exist ?) wrong, it says almost 100k and 91k is almost 100k.

Still im sure all the council tax payers across Scotland are relieved that the 'after tax' council tax monies are keeping everything equal. Whilst schools, roads, refuse, meals on wheels are kept on a tight budget our representitives ok the spending "NEARLY" £100,000 on equality.

Still, I quite agree, £120 for gender equality is painfully low ! I'd presonally like to see more funding for equality of "grannies with false teeth, tennis elbow and halitosis". An undoubtedly under represented minority !
