RISING demand for consumer electronics is hampering the fight against climate change, a report warned yesterday.
Digital radios, set-top boxes, laptops, plasma TVs, DVDs and computers have all soared in popularity.

But sophisticated new gadgets often use more power than older models, the report by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) said.

It predicted that by
2010, consumer electronics, computers and home entertainment systems would use 45 per cent of domestic electricity, with the equivalent of 14 power stations needed just to feed these devices.

The EST says having more hi-tech kit dotted around the home means consumers often forget what they have left switched on. And some electronic goods have no manual "off" switch, so they are permanently left on.

Some hi-tech devices are less energy-efficient than their predecessors. For example, because of set-top boxes, many viewers use more electricity while watching TV. By contrast, the latest designs of traditional domestic appliances, such as fridges and washing machines, are more energy-efficient than earlier models.

The increase in single- person households is also taking its toll on energy use. The EST said young, cash-rich professionals, who are quick to buy new technology, would see entertainment, computer and information technology taking up a growing proportion of their electricity bills.

Philip Sellwood, EST chief executive, said: "The report holds up a mirror to all of us and shows how easy it is to lose track of what is sucking up energy in our homes and costing us and the environment dear."

The EST is an independent non-profit organisation that was set up to help tackle climate change.

Lets be realistic - the big power users are heating and aircon. This story is just publicity for the white goods industry

Firstly:
All of the planets in our solar system are increasing in temperature. the increase is directly proportional to the distance they are from the sun.
our carbon footprint must also be responsible for the increasing temperatures on other planets too!

Secondly:
We don't need more excuses for stealth taxes.

I do however agree, that we need to look at renewable sustainable energy and ways to increase efficiency and to improve conservation methods.

Whatever the solution is to our present changing climate - you can be sure that the governments of our planet will have absolutely nothing to do with it.

If climate change was not such a big media issue we would hear nothing of such consumer goods, carbon footprints, energy usage etc.

I have not heard anything in the media about the massive change (rotating gravitational fields and enormous solar flares) taking place on the sun.
Isn't it about time we did!

Over half of the population have seen through all this man made global warming hype, despite the best efforts of the 'mass media',
opportunistic politicians and those chasing project funding. ID101 and Dragonhead raise just some of the issues which are routinely ignored.

Ah yes, I was wondering when the green luddites were going to attack technology, surprised it took this long. I'll pop out and gather some wood to contruct an abacus right away. The story that climate change is man-made is a con to try to force society back to the middle ages. Let's build some more nuclear power stations and treat these luddites with the contempt they deserve.

Just wait until the effects of the WEEE directive and the impact off lead free solder starts to take hold.

If you get three years out a major electrical item you'll be doing well.

... and what about the millions of office blocks and work places that leave their lights on all night every night around the world???

I have been getting so depressed by all this climate scaremongering I have just bought a new television and a bigger car to cheer myself up. Must say I am really enjoying both.

Doesn't anybody anymore turn off all their power-consuming high-tech toys and actually READ A BOOK?

It only takes one good reading lamp and you can have hours of environmentally-friendly fun and may actually LEARN something and thereby decrease the increasing and appalling ignorance of most of the world.

One day we will have to tackle the bottom line - population levels. There's too many on the planet, and we currently need a planet 1,5 times the size of earth to sustain it.

Lissten, Jennifer, you ignoramus and disgrace to womankind.

I offer a perfectly viable alternative and YOU call ME "pompous twit".

I believe you are consumed by your own self-importance and should learn to shut up when referring to your intellectual superiors - myself being one of them.

Now how that for being "pompous" you insignificant b**ch. I can give as good as I get and don't EVER get into a slanging match with me, madam.

I am NOT upset but merely appalled by the stupid and repetitive comments by the brain-damaged and probably sexually-frustrated Jennifer.

Find yourself a heavy-duty dildo, Jennifer.

Activists of various flavors have managed to get people's shorts in a knot over enhanced greenhouse (the concept of increased atmospheric greenhouse gas availability cranking up the misnamed 'greenhouse effect' and causing catastrophic surface heating). One major problem with this hypothesis that always seems to get lost or glossed over is that there has been three times more greenhouse gas in the atmosphere than required to deliver the current greenhouse effect since at least the end of the last great glaciation. There has never been a need for anthropogenic greenhouse enhancement to increase potential greenhouse warming because the atmosphere is already opaque in the relevant absorption bands in most regions (that is, there's 'competition' between overabundant GHG molecules for available outbound infrared radiation with only limited, regional potential remaining). This is why catastrophic warming scenarios generated by woeful 'climate models' are so laughable because models are programmed only with 'positive feedbacks' (even greater warming from trivial increase in absorber availability) while real world potential actually works with negative feedback (you get progressively less bang for your buck by adding more GHGs because there's insufficient suitable infrared radiation to go around). So, why the hysteria over something that physically cannot happen?

Getting back on topic for a moment, all high tech gadgets consume far less power than their older technology counterparts. Lcd TVs for example need lower voltages and use a fraction of the current of CRT TVs. The ICs used in modern electronic equipment do the job of hundreds of the old glass vacuum tubes ( valves ) of yesteryear and use a fraction of the power. The point being that the area of electronic gadgetry is perhaps the only area where power requirements continue to decrease.

As for the underlying reason for this topic . MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING IS A SCAM. A religion for the gullible and hard of thinking, a money spinner for it's prophets and a taxation and control mechanism for governments. Oh and I nearly forgot - A great sensational story for the media.
