A £15,000 study has been commissioned by Western Isles Council to look at how ferry services on the Stornoway-Ullapool route can provide the best quality and level of service for customers.
The report will identify options and suggest proposals for the next 20 years.

Here's some pointers for them:

1) Faster ferries, and not to be run at a slower speed to save fuel.

2) Cheaper ferries. We have the dearest ferry service in the world. Why can't we have Road Equivalent Tariff?

3) Boats which are not built to a (cheap) price, and which can sail in most weather conditions (for a change). If the Loch Seaforth could do it, why can't the Isle of Lewis?

4) A freight ferry which can sail even if a seagull has flapped its wings.

5) Boot out the jobsworths that slam the barriers down at exactly 45 minutes before the ferry sails, even if the boat is half empty.

6) A wee bit of a roof at the blunt end of the boat, so that smokers don't have to stand in the pouring rain, or, preferably, a section of the boat for smokers.

7) Bring back the ten journey tickets.

8) Make people control their children, and not allow them to roller skate around inside the boat, and scream and yell at the top of their voices.

9) Build a tunnel from Tarbert, Harris to Uig, Skye.

10) Tell the Scottish Executive to get their act together. After all, they own MacBraynes.

Agreed! This is a lifeline and we are literally held to ransom. Personal mobility is fine for those on the mainland but our personal mobility in Scotland starts with a tax of around £150 to get to Ullapool/Oban/Uig. Or bring in RET's.

1) dump CalMac
2) dump CalMac
3) get some real ferries like the ones that go to Ireland
4) reduce fairs for islanders
5) get rid of CalMac
6) LibDem Transport Ministers continue to fail the islanders and other users of these lifeline services.
7) vote the FibDems out of office
8) causeways, bridges, overland routes aren't considered as it would affect CalMac
9 back to point 1.

Agreed. Point 4 though? Reduce fares fall all, not just us islanders!

Why is Western Isles Council spending £15k in advance of the outcome of the tendering process which may well see the back of CalMac to which you aspire?

Surely that outcome should be awaited, stock taken and then if necessary spend the £15K. Lack of joined up thinking?
