Cairn gets ball rolling in India
CAIRN Energy, the Edinburgh-based oil and gas explorer headed by ex-Scottish rugby player Sir Bill Gammell, said it intends to start production at its second-biggest oil field in the first half of 2010.
Rahul Dhir, chief executive of the company's Indian subsidiary Cairn India, said it has received approval to develop the Bhagyam field, which is expected to have a peak production rate of 40,000 barrels a day (bpd).
Cairn struck oil at Mangala, its biggest field, in the desert state of Rajasthan in 2004, and is to start oil production at the field in the second half of 2009.
"Mangala will start in the second half of next year and we are hoping for Bhagyam to follow in about six months," Mr Dhir said.
He added that output from the Aishwariya field, which has won government approval, would start in the second half of 2010.
