THE good folk of Uddingston have reason to celebrate this morning.
We are informed that the councillor for Bothwell and Uddingston, Maureen Devlin, has cut the ribbon on what is being billed as the town's "first stockbroking and financial advisory
business".
The opening of the Edward Jones branch on Main Street takes the firm's UK network to 275 – part of a global presence that also spans the US and Canada. Local man Russell Provan will head the new outpost.
Edward Jones general partner Tim Niemann, who joined in the celebrations, tells us: "It is great to see Russell doing what Edward Jones does best – helping individual long-term investors plan for their financial future and retirement.
"The Edward Jones philosophy is based on a personal face-to-face service with customers, which is the ideal way to get to know them and their financial goals."
We can't believe residents of the South Lanarkshire town – home to confectionery icon Tunnock's – have spent so long in the financial advice wilderness. Given the current market turmoil, there could well be a queue at the door.

Jean-Claude Juncker, prime minister of Luxembourg, who told the European Parliament to fight inflation.
GOOD DAY
IntelTHE world's largest computer chip maker has won a contract with DreamWorks Animation.
Intel's processors will power the machines that DreamWorks uses to make its cartoon films, which have included Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, which went on general release on 4 July.
The news will come as a blow for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which had previously supplied DreamWorks with processors.
DreamWorks said the Intel chips would allow it to make all of its animations in three-dimensions.
BAD DAY
Andreas Sperl THE former chief financial officer of Airbus was yesterday detained by French police as part of an alleged insider trading inquiry.
Sperl, the current head of the Dresden plant in Germany, which belongs to the European Aeronautic Defence & Space Company (EADS), Airbus's parent company, is the fourth person to be detained in the probe.
Investigators are looking at share sales at EADS before an announcement in June 2006, which gave details of delays for Airbus' A380 super-jumbo and sent EADS shares tumbling.
