AQUAPHARM, the marine biotechnology company, has beefed up its board of directors, including a new fund-raising guru to lead licensing deals.
The Oban-based company said Douglas Thomson, a former chief executive at vaccine researcher SingVax, was joining as commercial director. Thomson has more than 20 years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry with expertise securing licensing deals and fund raising, participating in raising more than £30 million in venture financing.

Aquapharm's chief executive and founder, Andrew Mearns-Spragg, said Thomson's track record in commercial development was "formidable".

The company also announced that Professor Axel Kleemann, honorary professor of chemistry at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, was joining as a non-executive director.

Aquapharm is studying and mapping thousands of marine microbes to discover and develop new pharmaceutical and personal care products. Last July, it raised £4 million in secondary funding with backers including Dutch venture capital group Aescap and Scottish Enterprise.
