BUDGET airline Ryanair today announced its eight new routes out of Scotland to popular destinations such as Barcelona and Tenerife.
The low-cost operator is increasing its winter schedule to 26 routes out of Edinburgh – a 42% rise on last year's figure.

Edinburgh Airport bosses welcomed the expansion and said it was now the fastest growing airport anywhere in the UK.

The move comes just days after the airline decided to close down or switch nine of its 10 Manchester routes in a row over airport charges.

The no-frills Irish carrier's Edinburgh schedule will concentrate on winter sun and city breaks.

It will fly to Barcelona (Girona), Brussels (Charleroi), Gdansk, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Memmingen (Munich West), Oslo (Torp) and Tenerife this winter from October 30.

The airline is also extending its summer routes to and from Malta and Rome (Ciampino). The routes go on sale tomorrow.

The airline said it will carry two million passengers through Edinburgh this year, sustaining 2,000 local jobs.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, said: "We are delighted that Ryanair have once again committed to expanding their operation out of Edinburgh Airport, now the fastest growing airport anywhere in the UK.

"These are exciting new destinations, which will give our increasing numbers of passengers an even greater choice of places to jet off to this winter.

"We are particularly pleased to see new routes to Germany, Spain and Norway, key tourism markets for Scotland, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period."

About time, too, there has been a strange gap in this off-season market (Edinburgh-Barcelona) for 2 years. Just a shame it had to be Ryanair that filled it ...

Those place names in brackets next to the supposed destinations are very telling. For example, Barcelona (Girona)airport seems to be 95km away from Barcelona itself (according to Google Maps).
One could argue that's the price you pay for the low fares, but a consumer website recently bought four "£1" tickets to Berlin to see what the actual cost was. They ended up paying £396 once all the charges etc were added in. For example, if you forget to print out your boarding pass, Ryanair charge you an extra £40 to do it for you at the desk.

Who is actually flying Ryanair to keep them in business?

3: If you mean who travels on Ryanair: Me for one.

If you have a brain it's not that difiicult to work out which airline is best for which destination taking all factors into account. Is it?

2 - Don't much like Ryanair but if they are the best value for a destination I'm travelling to then I use them.

Here's a bit of advice..check the price on your screen just prior to clicking for the final time and that gives you the full cost. If you want to pay it, do so.......if you don't, then don't proceed any further.

Keep your luggage to a minimum, don't be late and don't mess up with your online checkin and you'll be fine.

Its not space flight afterall!

One tip is to get a virtual "visa electron" card - by paying it using electron you avoid their £5 per passenger per flight charge.

www.entropay.com is where to look - used it to book five returns to Dublin and saved £50

I booked 2 return £1 flights to Marseilles from Edinburgh with Ryanair, total cost including charges - £24! Seriously cheap way to get to the South of France! It's like a bus service - if you can't remember to bring your ticket, your problem!

Oh, and I've checked the Ryanair web site, the new routes are not up yet!

I would rather eat my own testicles than use Ruinair (The low care airline)...O'Leary is a loathesome creature..Maggie Thatcher in drag about sums him/she/it up.

#2: that's right. If you are uncapable of following some simple rules, RyanAir becomes quite expensive.
However, if you are willing to have yourself treated like a slave, being chased around airports and weighing your luggage before boarding, RyanAir is simply cheap. If often fly for £30 or less.
If you do not want to do that, pay more and fly BA. I am sure it's a nicer experience.
I don't care if they don't care, as long as they get me around cheaply.

#10 I can vouch for BA often not being any nicer experience than Ryanair!

As others have said, Ryanair lay all sorts of traps to try and get more money out of you. But with a bit of care spent reading all the options and small print on their web site, they can be the best option for some journeys.
