BELHAVEN Best has become Scotland's fifth-best selling on-trade alcohol brand.

According to figures from market research group Nielsen, the ale has moved up from ninth position last year, ranking above many best-selling brands of lager.

The Dunbar-based company's ale is the official beer of Scottish Rugby and the Scottish Golf Union. At the end of 2007 Belhaven announced that sales volumes for Best had increased by more than seven per cent, aided by its high profile sponsorships in sports, music and the arts, and a marketing campaign.

The company's Bill Hughes said: "It is very encouraging that Belhaven Best continues to perform well, particularly during tough times for the licensed trade."
