DISCOUNTED retailer Aldi has been named Grocer of the Year at the Oscars of the retail world.
The firm, which last week opened its first Edinburgh store in Gorgie, scooped the top prize at the annual Grocer Gold Awards and was also named discounter of the year at the event.

The award comes after the chain was also named supermarket of the year at the Which? awards, and won seven titles at the British Frozen Food Federation Awards.

Aldi was praised for its approach to providing quality at low prices, beating rivals Morrison's and TJ Morris.

The Grocer Gold Awards recognise the best in the grocery retail sector for service, initiative and commitment.

Managing director Paul Foley said the awards were testament to customer-focused operations.
