JOURNALISTS at the Herald in Glasgow yesterday went on strike over compulsory redundancies.
Staff at the Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times joined the walk-out and union members on the Sunday paper are refusing to work today.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said more than 200 people joined the action and a further one-day strike has been called for Wednesday.

The dispute has arisen over budget cuts and most recently centred on four members of staff at the Evening Times who face redundancy. Management claim internal reshuffles mean only one job is at stake, a claim disputed by unions.

NUJ organiser Paul Holleran said: "Newsquest [the owners] management questioned support for the strike, but it has been overwhelming."

Tim Blott, managing director of the Herald group, said: "We deeply regret the decision of the NUJ to continue its proposed strike."

OK, so let me get this straight. They're going to lose their jobs. So, they walk off the job? (stratching my head) And, this is supposed to force the management to keep them. OK. Worth a try. Kind of like reaching back for your parachute when in free fall from 25,000', after you left the parachute in the car boot.

They are also striking aginst declining standards. If the Northbritishperson staff had any integrity they would have joined them.

Many many many journalists these days rely on the internet and never do proper research or fact checking (certainly not the amount they once did!), hence the increasing number of errors in the media.

It's about time someone put a rocket up their backside and made them do the job properly. Reporting the real news and stop all this tittle tattle gossip journalism.

Apologies to those few hacks who still do a good job.

colin b and yonthing - why are you both so bitter?

it is SO easy to pontificate from the sidelines about a profession and working environment you know nothing about ...

do either of you actually make a living as journalists at all - let alone work for any of these titles??!!

Sorry, I can't find much sympathy for the NUJ inspired strike at The Herald, I'm still trying to come to terms with the NUJ inspired, ant-Semitic boycott of Israel.

poster 6 ... your assumptions are inaccurate ... i think perhaps you should have done a bit of research into the background of the newsquest strike before posting your glib comment :)
