A FIRM that creates instant keepsake photographs for tourists is planning significant expansion over the next three years, when it expects to triple its turnover to £750,000.
Borg Grech Events – which has contracts with the Falkirk Wheel and Edinburgh Zoo – also expects to grow its staff numbers from ten to around 30 over the same period.

The company began to grow dramatically after founder Paul Borg-Grech
designed a wireless instant photograph system as a consultant to tourism chiefs at the Falkirk Wheel in 2005. The system instantly transmits professionally-taken images from the camera to a computer.

British Waterways Scotland, which owns the attraction, hired Borg-Grech to run the service full-time.

Borg-Grech said: "Our successes at Falkirk Wheel and Edinburgh Zoo have proved just how effective our technology is.

"Visitors to both these attractions really respond to the fact that they can see their pictures displayed instantly – which means more sales are generated. Previously, you would have to wait until the pictures were downloaded on to a computer, which caused delays and that inevitably meant potential customers drifted away."

Carole Keltie, manager of Falkirk Wheel, added: "The service has been a great success and added value to the overall customer experience."

At Edinburgh Zoo, Borg Grech's system is used at the Rainbow Landings exhibition, in which visitors can walk through a special aviary and interact with rainbow lorikeets.

From a customer perspective, my daughter and I actually found the presence of the Borg Grech photographer to be very intrusive when we visited the Falkirk Wheel earlier this year and took the boat trip.

It was very much a case of the hard sell from the photographer and even when I said to her that we didn't want our photos taken she was very pushy and tried to over-rule me by talking to my daughter.

As a family we has visited the Falkirk Wheel on a number of occasions, whether it was taking overseas relatives, Halloween or Christmas and we have always found it to be a very pleasant and fun experience.
We normally forget to take our camera and so the presence of the photographers there has always been a bonus for us, we have some great keepsakes of these days and our relatives have been grateful for the photos to take home with them. Never have we found the staff to be pushy or forward, in fact the opposite, very helpful and accomodating and very patient whilst we deliberated over our photos!
