D-Day for Sunday sailings to Lewis

A PLAN for Sunday ferry sailings to Lewis goes before the board of Caledonian MacBrayne today.
It follows ministers' decision to spend £22.5 million on a 30-month trial, under which fares will be cut by nearly 50 per cent.

I just hope the MacBrayne's board doesn't let itself be unduly swayed by the curamachs. I also hope that any of them that are curamachs will declare and interest, i.e. admit their religious beliefs and abstain from the vote.

The lack of Sunday sailings is not only a blight on the further development of the island, but is a breach of our human rights in that it denies us the same transport opportunities as everyone else in the country.

The majority of islanders want Sunday sailings, and the large number that have to work on the mainland need Sunday sailings to allow them to get home at the weekend to see their families. The curamachs have no right to try and stop other people from travelling on a Sunday. Nobody is forcing them to travel. They can stay at home with the curtains drawn and say the books.

As a regular visitor who has family on the Island I would welcome Sunday sailings. Although I respect the religious beliefs of those opposed to sailings, the days of staying indoors on a Sunday (with the exception of going to church) are long gone.
