Rail bosses roll out new £180m fleet

CITY rail passengers are set to benefit from a new fleet of trains worth £180 million.
Train operator First ScotRail has announced the purchase of 38 engines and 130 new carriages that will seat around 9000 passengers.

Most of the trains will be deployed on the Glasgow- Edinburgh line.

First ScotRail said the new trains would lea
d to rolling stock being released to operate on the forthcoming Airdrie to Bathgate line, meaning more capacity on services between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

First ScotRail managing director Mary Grant, said: "This is the biggest electric trains order in Scotland for a decade.

"It will result in extra trains and services at a time when more and more people are choosing rail as their preferred means of travel."

The fleet will be air-conditioned and carriages will also be fitted with CCTV and power sockets for laptops.

The new rolling stock will be phased in over three years, but will begin running at stations from December 2010.

Finance Secretary John Swinney said: "It is really encouraging to see passenger numbers on our rail network increasing, but if we want that to continue, and if we want to encourage more Scots to switch from their cars, we need to continue to invest.

"Tens of thousands of commuters will experience the benefits of this investment."

These new ELECTRIC 3 or 4-car multiple units (not "38 engines and 130 carriages") will be "deployed" on Glasgow-Inverclyde/Airport/Ayrshire services,thus RELEASING the present units to other services INCLUDING the (to be reopened) Glasgow-Airdrie/
Bathgate-Edinburgh and NOT the main Glasgow-Edinburgh (via Falkirk) service as implied!

The new trains being ordered are for the west coast and Glasgow Airport rail link services. Existing (ie old) trains presently on these routes will be redeployed on other routes. So sorry, no new trains for Edinburgh - just some second hand ones that Ayrshire has fnished with - please check your facts more carefully! As someone above said, it was reported correctly in the Scotsman today.

nothing new there then, FIRST bus have been doing it for years down East Lothian... we've had clapped out OLD buses from Glasgow, York to name a few.

Nearly Vintage, even alot of there current Bus Fleet in East Lothian is 2nd hand pass me downs, we#ve not seen a BRAND NEW FIRST BUS For 10+ years.

And you won't get new ones. When Edinburgh was stripped of its local services in the 60s Glasgow kept most open and electrified them. When a main line to london was electrified it was the West Coast to Glasgow, not Edinburgh.
The madness is that the East Coast line was always the most profitable and local services into Edinburgh were busy, until the planned closure by stealth programme made the service more inconvenient.
Never mind here in New Zealand we have 2 fleets of 'new' trains that the government is very proud of. One of those fleets was bought from an Australian railway museum and the other fleet was bought from scrap 1970s BR stock. Even although the rail guage here is only 3'6" the vehicles are the same size so they had to have new [old] wheelsets to run here.
Makes Edinburgh's trains seem very new.

The East coast mainline was electrified 20 years ago. Anyone reading your comment would probably have concluded that this never happened. You would make a good politician'-)
